Videos on Subtraction for kids
On this page you will find our extensive library of videos on subtraction for kids. We aim to make teaching this fundamental arithmetic skill as simple and approachable as possible for children of all ages. This page includes choice excerpts from our growing catalogue of high-quality math videos. Gain access to the rest of our math videos by signing up to KidsMathTV.com as a member! We like to keep our videos short but packed with substantial information on different math topics. Each video usually has a runtime lasting somewhere around two to five minutes enough time for us to mentally engage kids while keeping them from being overwhelmed. The narrator of our videos on subtraction for kids speaks in a friendly and clear tone, and we use only simple and straightforward English in explaining our topics so that younger students and ESL learners can follow along. We even make use of a set of visual aids such as toys, flash cards, building blocks and whiteboard illustrations to expedite the process of explaining each concept to your students. You can let your child explore the world of subtraction at their convenience using the free math videos found on this page. Our coverage of subtraction topics is meant to be digestible to learners from kindergarten to elementary school. In addition, we always make sure that the competencies we include in each topic are compliant with common core state standards. To get started, kids can view our general introduction video on subtraction. Once theyve understood the basic process of reducing a number by another number, they can move on to learning how to convert word problems into subtraction equations. Word problems are a fantastic way to bridge the gap between learning the theoretical part of subtracting and applying it to real-world situations. This page currently contains two video excerpts on subtraction word problems. The first sample word problem is a simple exercise dealing with eight apples. Our second problem cranks up the challenge by a little bit; children will be tasked to solve a multi-step word problem involving nineteen pencils. We also have problems that concern how to subtract numbers with the use of regrouping, and another tutorial without any regrouping at all. Zeroes can be a tricky number to work with in subtracting operations, especially for younger children. To help them navigate through this bump in their learning progress, weve also featured a tutorial on how to subtract across zeroes. Lastly, as part of our collection of money-based math topics and other practical math skills, weve also made a subtraction word problem on spending dollars available here on this page. These videos on subtraction for kids are excellent partners to our math worksheets. Print and download our sheets on minus operations so your child can practice while watching our videos. Dont hesitate to sign up for a KidsMathTV.com account so that you can access our complete library of tutorials for a variety of math topics, as well as several other learning resources, to help you teach students effectively.

A short and catchy song about addition, this tune will for sure be stuck in everyone’s mind well after it’s over. One thing I love about this video is that both the numerals and the number of objects is included on screen. That way, teachers can pause the song and make connections if need be.

Subtraction
For more practice in subtraction (with or without borrowing), you could go to our Interactive Math Zone where you can generate worksheets according to your needs and get them marked online.
Subtraction Without Borrowing
We do not need to borrow if the first digit is large enough to subtract the second digit.
Example : 97 – 33 = 64
Subtraction With Borrowing
We need to borrow if the first digit is smaller than the second digit.
Example : 91 – 77 = 14
The result of subtraction is called the difference of the numbers. In the above example, 13 is the difference of 91 and 77.
Example : 1,000 – 576 – 48 = 376

Subtraction with Borrowing (Simple)
Math video: borrowing explained.
Sample problem demonstrates subtraction with borrowing (regrouping).
Emphasis is on recognizing the problem (trying to subtract a larger number in the ones column from a smaller number) and solving this by regrouping one of the tens into ones to allow for the "normal" subtraction (small from big).

Kindergarten Subtraction: Chasing Chickens
- Greg Smedley-Warren
- May 12, 2024
Kindergarten subtraction should be fun and hands-on. The science of math tells us that kids need direct instruction, modeling, dialogue, and lots of practice. Chasing Chickens is a fun, low-prep subtraction game that gets kids moving, talking, and practicing subtraction.
To prep the game, you need chickens. The chickens are actually balloons. We use yellow balloons for chickens. You can use pink for chasing pigs, white for sheep, etc. Use a Sharpie to write equations on the balloons. To get the balloons from home to school, we put them in a big trash bag!
Subtraction Games: Chase the chickens
Get the kids excited by telling the kids there are chickens in the closet, and we’re going to let them out, and they have to chase them. Ya’ll. They get so excited thinking we will do subtraction by chasing chickens.
To play, we throw the balloons (chickens) around the room. When I say “chase,” they grab a balloon, write the equation, and answer on their recording sheet. When they finish, they throw the chicken and prepare for the next one! As they’re playing, I walk around checking their work, helping when needed, and observing. I love watching them utilize the strategies we’ve learned and hearing them talk about math and how they solved their problems.
Check out this video to see our kindergarten subtraction game in action! And yes, we set the stage to engage by using chicken noises when we play this game!

Then they subtract out 50 and then they subtract out three. So the 200 and the three make sense. You can view 853 minus 283 as 853 minus 200s minus 80, eight 10s right here, minus three. But that's not what they wrote in here. Instead of putting an 80 here, they put a 50, so we can rule that out. Here we have 853 minus 20 minus 800 minus three.
