There are many branches of chemistry or chemistry disciplines. The five main branches are organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and biochemistry.

Branches of Chemistry

  • Traditionally, the five main branches of chemistry are organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and biochemistry. However, sometimes biochemistry is considered a subdiscipline of organic chemistry.
  • The branches of chemistry overlap those of physics and biology. There is also some overlap with engineering.
  • Within each major discipline there are many subdivisions.

What Is Chemistry?

Chemistry, like physics and biology, is a natural science. In fact, there is considerable overlap between chemistry and these other disciplines. Chemistry is a science that studies matter. This includes atoms, compounds, chemical reactions, and chemical bonds. Chemists explore the properties of matter, its structure, and how it interacts with other matter.

Overview of the 5 Branches of Chemistry

  • Organic Chemistry : Organic chemistry is the study of carbon and its compounds . It is the study of the chemistry of life and reactions occurring in living organisms. An organic chemistry might study organic reactions, the structure and properties of organic molecules, polymers, drugs, or fuels.
  • Inorganic Chemistry : Inorganic chemistry is the study of compounds not covered by organic chemistry. It is the study of inorganic compounds, or compounds that don't contain a C-H bond. A few inorganic compounds do contain carbon, but most contain metals. Topics of interest to inorganic chemists include ionic compounds, organometallic compounds, minerals, cluster compounds, and solid-state compounds.
  • Analytical Chemistry : Analytical chemistry is the study of the chemistry of matter and the development of tools to measure properties of matter. Analytical chemistry includes quantitative and qualitative analysis, separations, extractions, distillation, spectrometry and spectroscopy, chromatography, and electrophoresis. Analytical chemists develop standards, chemical methods, and instrumental methods.
  • Physical Chemistry: Physical chemistry is the branch of chemistry that applies physics to the study of chemistry, which commonly includes the applications of thermodynamics and quantum mechanics to chemistry.
  • Biochemistry : Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes that occur inside of living organisms. Examples of key molecules include proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, drugs, and neurotransmitters. Sometimes this discipline is considered a subdiscipline of organic chemistry. Biochemistry is closely related to molecular biology, cell biology, and genetics.

Other Branches of Chemistry

There are other ways chemistry can be divided into categories. Depending on who you ask, other disciplines might be included as a main branch of chemistry. Other examples of branches of chemistry include:

  • Astrochemistry : Astrochemistry examines the abundance of elements and compounds in the universe, their reactions with each other, and the interaction between radiation and matter.
  • Chemical Kinetics : Chemical kinetics (or simply "kinetics") studies the rates of chemical reactions and processes and the factors that affect them.
  • Electrochemistry : Electrochemistry examines the movement of charge in chemical systems. Often, electrons are the charge carrier, but the discipline also investigates the behavior of ions and protons.
  • Green Chemistry : Green chemistry looks at ways of minimizing the environmental impact of chemical processes. This includes remediation as well as ways of improving processes to make them more eco-friendly.
  • Geochemistry : Geochemistry examines the nature and properties of geological materials and processes.
  • Nuclear Chemistry : While most forms of chemistry mainly deal with interactions between electrons in atoms and molecules, nuclear chemistry explores the reactions between protons, neutrons, and subatomic particles.
  • Polymer Chemistry : Polymer chemistry deals with the synthesis and properties of macromolecules and polymers.
  • Quantum Chemistry : Quantum chemistry applies quantum mechanics to model and explore chemical systems.
  • Radiochemistry : Radiochemistry explores the nature of radioisotopes, the effects of radiation on matter, and the synthesis of radioactive elements and compounds.
  • Theoretical Chemistry : Theoretical chemistry is the branch of chemistry that applies mathematics, physics, and computer programming to answer chemistry questions.

The 5 primary types of chemical reactions are:

  • Combination reaction
  • Decomposition reaction
  • Displacement reaction
  • Double Displacement reaction
  • Precipitation Reaction

1. Combination Reaction

  • A reaction in which two or more reactants combine to form a single product is known as a combination reaction.
  • It takes the form of X + Y → XY
  • Combination reaction is also known as a synthesis reaction.
  • Example of combination reaction: 2Na + Cl 2  → 2NaCl

2. Decomposition Reaction

  • A reaction in which a single compound breaks into two or more simpler compounds is known as a decomposition reaction.
  • It takes the form of XY → X + Y
  • A decomposition reaction is just the opposite of a combination reaction.
  • Example of a decomposition reaction: CaCO 3  → CaO + CO 2
  • The reaction in which a compound decomposes due to heating is known as a thermal decomposition reaction.

3. Displacement Reaction

  • A chemical reaction in which a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its aqueous salt solution.
  • It takes the form X + YZ → XZ + Y
  • It is also called a substitution reaction
  • Example of displacement reaction: Zn + CuSO 4  → ZnSO 4 + Cu

4. Double Displacement Reaction

  • A chemical reaction in which ions get exchanged between two reactants which form a new compound is called a double displacement reaction.
  • It takes the form of XY + ZA → XZ + YA
  • It is also called a metathesis reaction
  • Example of double displacement reaction:

\(\begin{array}{l}~~~~~~~~~~~\end{array} \) BaCl 2 + Na 2 SO 4  → BaSO 4 + 2NaCl

5. Precipitation Reaction

  • A chemical reaction that involves the formation of an insoluble product (precipitate; solid) is called Precipitation reaction.
  • The reactants are soluble, but the product formed would be insoluble and separates out as a solid.
  • The chemical equation by which a chemical change is described is adequate for reaction in solutions, but for reactions of ionic compounds in aqueous solution (water), the typical molecular equation has different representations.
  • A molecular equation may indicate formulas of reactants and products that are not present and eliminate completely the formulas of the ions that are the real reactants and products.
  • If the substance in the molecular equation that is actually present as dissociated ions are written in the form of their ions, the result is an ionic equation.

A precipitation reaction occurs when a solution, originally containing dissolved species, produces a solid, which generally is denser and falls to the bottom of the reaction vessel.

The most common precipitation reactions occurring in aqueous solution involve the formation of an insoluble ionic compound when two solutions containing soluble compounds are mixed. Consider what happens when an aqueous solution of NaCl is added to an aqueous solution of AgNO 3 . The first solution contains hydrated Na + and Cl − ions and the second solution, Ag + , and NO 3 − ions.

NaCl(s) → Na + (aq) + Cl − (aq)

AgNO 3 (s) → Ag + (aq) + NO 3 − (aq)

When mixed, a double displacement reaction takes place, forming the soluble compound NaNO 3 and the insoluble compound AgCl. In the reaction vessel, the Ag + and Cl − ions combine, and a white solid precipitated from the solution. As the solid precipitates, the Na + and NO 3 − ions remain in solution.

The overall double displacement reaction is represented by the following balanced equation:

NaCl(aq) + AgNO 3 (aq) → AgCl(s) + NaNO 3 (aq)

  • When aqueous solutions of Pb(NO 3 ) 2 and KI are mixed, does a precipitate form?
  • Write a balanced equation for the precipitation reaction that occurs when aqueous solutions of copper(II) iodide and potassium hydroxide are combined.

You are asked to predict whether a precipitate will form during a chemical reaction and to write a balanced equation for a precipitation reaction.

You are given the identity of two reactants.

1. Yes, a solid precipitate, PbI 2 , forms when these solutions are mixed:

Pb(NO 3 ) 2 (aq) + KI(aq)  → PbI 2 (s) + 2KNO 3 (aq)

2. The two products of the reaction are insoluble copper (II) hydroxide and soluble potassium  iodide.

CuI 2 (aq) + 2 KOH(aq)  → Cu(OH) 2 (s) + 2 KI(aq)

How do you identify a chemical reaction?

A chemical reaction is typically followed by physical signs that are readily detected, such as heat and light emission, precipitate formation, gas evolution, or a change of appearance.

How do you identify physical and chemical changes?

The shape or form of the matter varies through a physical transition, but the sort of matter in the material does not. In a chemical shift, however, the type of matter shifts and at least one new material with new properties is created. There is no straight cut of the gap between physical and chemical transition.

Why do we write a chemical equation?

The purpose of writing a balanced chemical equation is to explain the occurring reactants (starting material) and products (end results). The ratios in which they answer so that you can measure the amount of reactants you need and the amount of goods you can make.

What is chemical reaction and equation?

A chemical equation is the symbolic representation in the form of symbols and formulas of a chemical reaction in which the reactant entities on the left-hand side and the product entities on the right-hand side are given.

What is the skeleton equation?

A skeleton equation is when each product that takes part in the reaction is written with the chemical formulas describing the chemical reaction. Examples: The term equation: oxygen + methane. Dioxide with carbon + Vapour.

In the organic chemistry lab course there are two types of reports, which are all graded on a 100 point scale. One type comprises what’s commonly known as “lab reports,” that is, records referring to experiments performed in the lab. The other type refers to special assignments that are completed outside the laboratory. The format and contents of special assignments depends on their nature. Lab reports, on the other hand, have a set format. They can be or two kinds, depending on whether they refer to experiments involving physical operations or chemical preparations (synthesis).

LAB REPORTS FOR PHYSICAL OPERATIONS, OR TECHNIQUE EXPERIMENTS

This type of report refers to lab work whose main objective is to learn, demonstrate, or perform a physical operation. Physical operations do not change the chemical nature of the substances involved. They are typically conducted as part of a synthesis and are frequently of two types:

1. Purification techniques, or separations. These operations are designed to isolate a pure substance from a mixture. Examples are crystallization, extraction, and distillation.

2. Characterization techniques. These operations are designed to return information that can be used to identify a substance. Examples are the determination of physical constants such as melting point, boiling point, or density, and instrumental techniques such as infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Sometimes these techniques are referred to as analytical techniques.

LAB REPORTS FOR CHEMICAL PREPARATIONS, OR SYNTHESIS

This type of report refers to experiments whose main goal is to prepare a pure substance from specific starting materials. This necessarily involves a chemical transformation, or reaction. In the simplest case, there is only one step. The starting materials are combined and a product forms. This product is isolated, purified, and characterized, producing the final outcome of the experiment. In a multistep synthesis, the product of the first step is used as a starting material in a second step, and so on, until a final product is obtained. No multistep syntheses are performed in organic lab I. Some two step syntheses are performed in organic lab II.
