Onboarding New Employees — Without Overwhelming Them

A great onboarding experience can keep new hires engaged and committed, and increase their learning and preparedness for their new role. In trying to ensure new employees feel supported and properly prepared, some organizations flood new hires with far too much information. Even if managers have the best intentions, bombarding new hires with tasks  — such as asking them to read every single page of the employee manual or requiring them to get set-up on Slack, email, Box, and all the other platforms all at once — will backfire. Three strategies can help organizations mitigate this overload and ensure employees have the space, time, and mental resources available to learn and thrive in their new job.

A good onboarding process — with clear information on job requirements, organizational norms, and performance expectations — not only enhances employee productivity but helps increase loyalty and engagement, and decrease s turnover .

How to conduct contractor performance evaluations.

A contractor’s safety is directly correlated to their overall performance at the job. An often-overlooked aspect of contractor management is the act of conducting performance evaluations. They are important because they provide insight into how the quality of output from your external contractors is affecting your overall business performance.

Performance evaluations can be used to scale your business, make changes to your organization, and plan proactively for the future. When assessing the performance of your contractors, there are a number of factors that you must consider. These factors will enable you to make data-backed decisions in an effort to make business operations safer and more productive. Read on to learn more about what factors you should be considering when conducting a contractor performance evaluation.

Submission of required documentation

• Are your contractors able to provide valid documentation when requested?
• Have you received incomplete documentation from your contractors in the past?
• How long does it take for your contractors to prove their credentials are valid?
• Are any of your contractors missing any required documentation, which is causing a delay in operations?

Operational Assessment

• Has there been any safety incidents stemming from your contractors?
• Have any of your contractors caused damages to your worksite, equipment, or tools?
• Have you had to flag your contractors for noncompliance before?
• Have you or your stakeholders been concerned about the delivery of services providers by your vendors?
• Did your contractors experience any job restrictions or stop work orders while at your worksite?
• Did your worksite experience any environmental incidents due to your contractors?
• Have you had to distribute notices/warnings to any of your contractors?

Progress Evaluation

• Are your contractors making progress on projects in a timely manner?
• Are any of your contractors causing a delay to business operations?
• Have your contractors improved at completing their tasks?
• Are all project requirements met once completed?
• Are your contractors providing timely and accurate updates to project progress?

Compatibility/Productivity

• Are your contractors able to work well with all of your internal employees?
• Are they producing measurable results that contribute to company goals?
• Do your contractors reflect the safety standards of your company?
• Do your contractors adhere to company policy regarding health and safety?
• Do your contractors adhere to all guidelines specific to completing a task?

Providing yourself with a detailed response to each of these questions can afford you valuable insight into how your third-party hires are performing in relation to the productivity they display, as well as their safety practices in relation to what is required from your organization and federal/state regulations. After collecting this information, the next logical step is to conduct a succession plan that details what action you will take to move forward with new and existing contractors. To do this, you must first enlist all the primary reasons for your performance evaluation. A few reasons may include:

• Deciding which contractor(s) your organization will hire
• Keeping a record of all contractor activity at your worksite(s)
• Tracking the progress of your projects that contractors work on
• Identifying gaps in your compliance caused by third parties
• Preserving resources, money, and time for projects
• Collecting data on how to strengthen contractor relationships

Using this information, hiring organizations can then make informed decisions on how to move forward with their contractor management strategy. Depending on the outcome of your projects, you may want to adjust your onboarding process, reevaluate your prequalification criteria, or allocate your time and resources to monitoring third-party activities through the means of contractor management software. Either way, the best safety plan is the one that grants you full visibility over your operations and is adaptive to adjustments and growth. Over time, your contractor performance evaluations will save you time and money and make your workplace a safer and healthier environment for everyone. These effects will allow you to refocus your business on its vital operations with minimal disruptions.

Overview of Project Financial Management and Grants Management Offerings

In the Project Financial Management and Grants Management business process areas, your enterprise can configure how you manage projects, including how to plan, budget, or forecast, manage awards, collect costs, bill customers, manage project templates and flexfields, and report performance.

Before you begin, use the Setup and Maintenance work area to access reports for each offering, including full lists of setup tasks, the functional areas and features that you can select when you configure the offering, and business objects and enterprise applications that are associated with the offering.

The first implementation step is to configure the offering in the Setup and Maintenance work area by selecting the offering, functional areas, and features that you want to make available to implement.

This table describes the project-related functional areas for the Project Financial Management and Grants Management offerings.

The following functional areas are also in the Project Financial Management and Grants Management offerings, but aren't unique to these offerings:

Optionally, create one or more implementation projects for the offerings, functional areas, and features that you want to implement first, which generates task lists for each project. The application implementation manager can configure the task list and assign and track each task.

Alternatively, you can use the rapid implementation feature to set up the Project Financial Management or Grants Management offerings by populating and loading the Rapid Implementation for Project Financial Management Applications macro-enabled Excel spreadsheet. This spreadsheet has a worksheet for key setup object or group of setup objects. The setup includes key business objects and tasks such as, resources, burdening, and subledger accounting. The Setup and Maintenance work area has a specific task list for rapid implementation. The Define Project Financial Management Configuration for Rapid Implementation task list includes tasks to download a new spreadsheet and to load the setup data. After uploading the spreadsheet, the Project Financial Management or Grants Management application is fully configured and ready for you to create project templates and to enter transactions. You can upload the spreadsheet multiple times during the initial implementation until your setup is finalized.

Which ForeFlight subscription plan is right for me?

Over the past 14 years, ForeFlight has grown from a simple phone app created by two part time software developers into a powerful suite of flight planning tools supported by a Fortune 100 company. That has meant more features, global coverage, and custom-built external devices—and as a result, safer and easier flights. However, this growth has also meant an increasing array of choices for pilots to make.

ForeFlight now offers three main subscription plans: Basic Plus, Pro Plus, and Performance Plus. On top of that there are choices for geographic regions, and considerations for fleet operators. Which subscription is right for you? What are the pros and cons of each level? In this article, we’ll examine the key differences and offer a few opinions. We will not list every feature with every plan ( ForeFlight has a nice comparison chart on their site ), but we will help you match your subscription to your mission.

Basic Plus—$120/year

ForeFlight’s drop-down FPL window is a powerful flight plan editor.

Don’t let the word “basic” mislead you here—the lowest cost plan from ForeFlight is loaded with features. In fact, if you’re just starting out as a pilot, or if you fly exclusively on VFR days in the local area, Basic Plus is more than enough. It includes complete preflight planning features, like the powerful FPL window on the Maps page, full charts, a huge library of weather maps, graphical weather briefings, flight plan filing, and detailed airport information. That’s enough to plan a route, get an accurate time en route and fuel burn, get a weather briefing, and navigate in flight with current FAA charts.

Beyond those essentials, Basic Plus includes some helpful add-ons (which a lot of pilots overlook). For example, the built-in logbook is an easy way to track your currency and is a legal replacement for paper logbooks. The weight and balance tool calculates gross weight and center of gravity for a wide range of airplanes. The checklist feature can keep your flight organized, with pre-loaded templates and options for customization.

Also note that Basic Plus is not a “VFR plan.” It includes both IFR and VFR charts, and will file flight plans for IFR, VFR, or international flights.

Pro Plus—$240/year

ForeFlight synthetic vision includes terrain, obstacles, and traffic.

Based on our informal surveys of general aviation pilots, this plan is probably the most popular option. It’s double the price of Basic Plus but still less expensive than a typical paper chart subscription. The most valuable additions here are:

• Geo-referenced approach and taxi charts.  This seems like a small thing, but once you’ve flown an instrument approach with your airplane’s position overlaid on the approach plate, it’s hard to go back. This requires a GPS source (either internal to the iPad or from an external ADS-B receiver), but most pilots have that anyway. One note: Basic Plus includes geo-referenced taxi diagrams as a part of the Aeronautical map layer, but Pro Plus adds the actual FAA charts .
• Option to overlay approach plates on the Maps page.  The next step is to actually overlay a plate on the Maps page. This integrates critical approach information into the moving map display, and makes it easy to add weather and traffic information to your approach path. This can be quickly removed if you need to declutter the screen.
• Synthetic vision.  This powerful split-screen view adds a lifelike view of the outside world, including terrain, obstacles, and traffic. It’s a great aid to situational awareness and a helpful backup in an emergency. This feature will show a GPS-derived bank as you turn, but to unlock full pitch and roll you’ll need an ADS-B receiver with an AHRS (see below for more).
• Terrain profile and airspace.  Here’s another feature that often gets overlooked. From the Maps page, open the FPL window and tap on Profile. You’ll see a side view of your planned route, including terrain, obstacles, and airspace.

As you can see from the above list, some of these features will appeal mostly to IFR pilots. But terrain profile and synthetic vision are invaluable for VFR pilots too. If you fly a lot of cross country flights, we think Pro Plus is worth it.

Performance Plus—$360/year

Performance Plus includes a powerful takeoff and landing performance calculator.

The newest subscription level, Performance Plus, might sound like an offering for jets, but while some of the features found here are definitely most useful for turbine pilots that doesn’t mean Baron or Cirrus owners should ignore it. The core of this plan is detailed, airplane-specific performance profiles (available for hundreds of aircraft ), which take into consideration weight, altitude, and temperature. The result is very accurate time en route and fuel calculations, and this is helpful no matter what you fly. We’ve found the estimates to be shockingly good .

In addition to the more accurate aircraft profiles, there are a host of higher end features that make both preflight planning and in-flight navigation easier. Many of ForeFlight’s recent updates have built out their 3D views, including airport previews, route overviews, and track log playback. Sophisticated takeoff and landing calculations are also available, so you can “run the math” before every flight—including temperature, runway slope, and wind. Finally, Trip Assistant is a handy online tool that makes it easy to compute total trip time (including ground transportation) or plan a fuel stop.

Two features in Performance Plus really are reserved for turbine pilots. First, the integrated JetFuelX tool allows pilots to quickly research prices at any airport, including contract fuel prices. So instead of simply seeing list prices and having to call each FBO for a quote, you can enter all your cards online (Avfuel, Colt, CAA, etc.) and get accurate prices based on the number of gallons you’ll purchase. This is a huge time saver for anyone who buys fuel away from home. Second, while takeoff and landing calculations are available for many piston and turboprop airplanes as a standard feature in Performance Plus, ForeFlight also offers a sophisticated Runway Analysis tool (for an additional fee) for jets. This includes complete calculations for takeoff, factoring in obstacles, engine-out procedures, and emergency return.

What about ADS-B receivers?

A frequent question we hear is whether you need a specific ForeFlight plan to use an external device, like a Sentry or Stratus . The good news is, portable GPS and ADS-B receivers work with all three subscriptions. To use a Sentry, for example, just turn it on and connect to your iPad via WiFi (in the Settings app). When you open ForeFlight you’ll see the ADS-B receiver connected, and you can display radar, METARs, and traffic on the Maps page. All of these features are available no matter what subscription you have.

There’s one asterisk. Many of these devices include a built-in AHRS to deliver backup attitude information to your iPad. With a Basic Plus subscription, you’ll see real-time pitch and roll on the left side of the screen with a standard blue/brown horizon; with Pro Plus or Performance Plus, you’ll see a synthetic vision view that adds terrain and obstacles. So the AHRS feature works with all three levels, but the two higher ones include a nice enhancement.

How many devices?

A subscription to ForeFlight is a license for one person to use ForeFlight on two iPads and an iPhone, or one iPad and two iPhones. That means you can use it on an iPad (primary) and an iPhone (backup) without buying two subscriptions, but two pilots who share an airplane should buy two separate subscriptions.

Geographic coverage

All of ForeFlight’s pricing is based on one geographic region, but the good news is that “geographic region” means typically a country or even continent—not just a few states. For example, $120/year buys a Basic Plus plan for all of the United States; if you live in Canada you can change that coverage area to Canada for the same price.

Likewise, you can add coverage for $100/year, so if you fly in both the US and Canada, the Canadian charts requires a simple $100 add-on, not a separate subscription. European coverage—complete with Jeppesen European VFR data, EUROCONTROL AIP procedures, and more—is also available.

Jeppesen Charts

ForeFlight comes standard with FAA charts and data-driven maps, but pilots can also add Jeppesen IFR charts for an additional charge (typically $200-500/year). This is particularly attractive for pilots flying outside the US and Canada, or for jet pilots who regularly fly to multiple countries. If you already subscribe to Jeppesen charts for your airplane, you may be able to link that subscription to ForeFlight.

Business plans

Finally, if you’re in a flight department, charter operator, or fractional operation, ForeFlight offers a  Business Plan  specifically targeted at multi-pilot companies. Business Pro is $200/year and Business Performance is $300/year, but discounts are available for five or more pilots.

As you can see, there are a lot of options here. That’s mostly because ForeFlight serves a huge variety of operators, from student pilots to business jet pilots to airline pilots. Our advice is to not overthink things. Here are the takeaways:

• If you’re just starting out, Basic Plus is a great plan—much more than just a demo, and more features than any app had five or six years ago.
• Pro Plus is a slam dunk for instrument pilots, and probably worth serious consideration for VFR pilots who fly cross country a lot. Synthetic vision alone will seal the deal for many.
• If you fly a higher performance piston, a turboprop, or a jet, Performance Plus is a good investment. You’ll probably save the extra $100/year in better fuel planning. If you’re flying a Cessna 172 on CAVU days, this plan is probably overkill.
• Remember, you can always upgrade if you decide you want more features so don’t worry if you have subscription envy three months after signing up. ForeFlight makes this pretty painless: if you make changes to your subscription mid-term, like upgrading to a higher plan, the balance of your remaining time is credited to the new subscription.

Am I wrong or do you have to have Performance Plus just to do basic takeoff and landing calculations? I am a Bonanza that wants to fly in and out of small strips in the mountains.

That’s right. Performance Plus gives you the takeoff and landing calculations for piston and turboprop airplanes. The only add-on is if you want the full jet takeoff, engine out calculations.

When my current Jepp chart subscription comes up for renewal, do I renew it again to get the charts linked to Foreflight? My subscription costs me about $999 per year.

Does foreflight cover Australia as well ?

Yes, the airport database is global. However, if you want full IFR charts you’ll need to add a Jeppesen subscription (about $270 for that region).

I have a GLD 39 portable GPS receiver in my C182, It is for the Garmin 696 that is built into the panel, but I would like to hook up my foreflight on my mini I pad as well. I have no problem connecting the bluetooth to the GLD 39, but I don’t seem to be getting traffic information. My mini I pad is a cellular model so I get the traffic on the ground, but up in the air it typically disappears. What am I doing wrong?

This sounds obvious, but check to make sure the traffic layer is turned on for the Maps page. If so, tap on More -> Devices and see if the GDL 39 shows up there.

There are some illogical Feature exclusions (and even a few inclusions) between subscription levels in my opinion. I’ll focus on only one in this comment. Geo-referenced Taxi charts– this feature should be included in the Basic Plus tier. Of course that is self serving since I am a day time VFR Sport Pilot; will never have an instrument rating or cover 1000 miles in one day. But really, all the recent 3-D visuals and graphics are logically offered only in higher tiers and that makes sense. Some might even argue that Instrument Flying features belong only in higher tiers but I don’t want to take anything away from Private Pilots exercising light instrument flying in modest aircraft who benefit from those features. Synthetic Vision and full PFD features are also a very logical feature set, deserving of a higher price point. For what this humble pilot’s opinion is worth, I really believe Geo-referenced Taxi Charts belong in the Basic Plus plan. Thank you.

Dennis, You must be a handsome fella with such a great name! I use a ForeFlight military flight bag (plan) for work and have a Pro Plus subscription for when I’m playing around in a club-owned 172. I love the geo-referenced plates (for IFR) and couldn’t agree with you more; it’s one of the main reasons I went up to the mid-level plan. I also agree that the $100 more a year for geo-referenced plates is likely overkill for non-IFR pilots, but leaves them out in the cold for taxi. The lack of this feature in the basic plan is not ideal based on the possible runway incursions it could help prevent, among other things including enhanced SA during taxi. It’s even one of the skill components of taxi in the Private Pilot ASEL ACS: Use an airport diagram or taxi chart during taxi, if published, and maintain situational awareness. While researching what subscription I wanted to purchase for personal use I did read a great tip that might help you here. By displaying the Aeronautical layer you can zoom in while on deck at any field and see the field structure, to include all taxiway names, Rwy numbers, FBO location and names, etc. Its essentially all the data you would receive from a taxi plate, and it’s geo-referenced in that your aircraft is displayed since you are not in a plate. All you have to do is zoom in during taxi and tap the position button top right to keep yourself centered as you taxi. Zoom out after departure. This displays no matter what other layer you have selected (i.e. sectional, ELA, etc) as long as you have the aeronautical layer selected. Hopefully this workaround helps with this specific issue. An employment lawyer explains the 3 things you should do the moment you're put on a PIP

• Craig Levey is an employment law attorney of over 12 years.
• He says that PIPs are often used by companies to "paper the file"  once they've already decided to fire the employee. 
• If put on a PIP, you should read it carefully, consider if it's reasonable, and decide how to respond.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Craig Levey, an employment law attorney and partner at Bennett & Belfort, P.C., a law firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

In my experience as an employment law attorney of 12 years, performance-improvement plans, or PIPs, result in termination in most cases. While there are circumstances where an employee survives the PIP and keeps working there, those situations are rare.

Many companies use PIPs to paper the file; they document the areas in which this employee is deficient, and then once the PIP is over — or sometimes even sooner — they terminate the employee and say, "As we outlined in the PIP, things weren't going well in certain areas. We don't feel like you've improved, so we're going to part ways with you."

PIPs are a tool for companies to prevent litigation, too, because then they can argue that they didn't terminate the employee because of discrimination, retaliation, or sexual harassment but rather because of performance.

When an employee receives a PIP , there are three steps that I suggest that they follow.

1. Read the PIP very carefully

Many people are so shocked that they receive a PIP that they don't actually take the time to take a deep breath, sit down, and read it.

You want to fully understand the language that's in the PIP and what the expectations are. If you need clarification because there's not enough information, you should go back and ask your company your questions and see if they offer support, such as one-on-one meetings with your supervisor.

2. Decide if the PIP is reasonable

Once you've read the PIP, ask yourself, is this PIP designed for me to fail, or is it reasonable?

A good PIP should be very clear about the areas where the employee is supposedly deficient. In a reasonable timeframe, it should spell out how that employee will get better and offer support such as regular meetings with their supervisor.

A bad PIP is very short and doesn't articulate the areas in which the employee needs to get better, so the employee is left confused and doesn't know what is being asked of them. There either isn't a timeframe given, or the timeframe is unreasonable, and no support is offered to help the employee improve.

Related stories

After receiving a bad PIP, the employee walks away confused or feeling unreasonable. Typically, when an employee receives a bad PIP, it means the company doesn't want them to improve. It's just a tool to pave the way for the termination.

3. Decide whether to respond

If, after reading your PIP, you feel it's actually pretty reasonable and you can satisfy the requirements in the time allotted, you don't need to respond. Just move on and focus on working on what's needed and satisfying the requirements laid out.

But sometimes, there are unfair PIPs with requirements that even the best employee in the world could never satisfy. If the PIP is unrealistic or unreasonable, then you need to respond.

If you decide to respond, email your supervisor or HR and spell out why it is unreasonable. Perhaps the timeframe is not long enough, or the expectations are unattainable, or the company isn't offering any support.

By spelling out the ways the PIP is unreasonable, it can protect your interests a bit in the event that you are later terminated.

Is the PIP retaliatory?

You should also think about whether the PIP is retaliatory. A lot of companies will issue a PIP in retaliation for the employee complaining about something illegal going on in the workplace or taking leave for disabilities or pregnancy, which is protected under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) .

Leave is there for a reason. If you have a disability, if you have mental health issues, or if you're pregnant, then you need to use your leave options because that's precisely what they're there for.

Unfortunately, I see all the time that companies perceive employees who take leave to be a burden. Companies don't like when they have somebody out of work and they have to satisfy those duties, either by hiring somebody to fill in or asking somebody else to take on those duties.

This happens far too often across the US. When you look at other countries around the world — how they value leave and how much time off they give people — there's more emphasis on quality of life rather than the American way, which is focused on the "grind." American companies put so much more emphasis on the bottom line and making money and less on employee well-being.

If you believe your PIP is due to your company retaliating against you, then you can respond in writing; articulate what you believe the PIP is in retaliation for, and spell out the illegal conduct. Keep a copy of that email so that in the event that you do get terminated in the future, you're preserving the record for purposes of litigation.

When I'm speaking with clients, I look at the full picture because, in many cases, I see a situation where an employee was a strong performer for many years and received good performance evaluations, but then they complained about something illegal or took protected medical leave and all of a sudden they received the PIP.

To me, that doesn't add up. You don't just suddenly become a bad performer when you have a documented history of strong performance reviews.

It's better for companies to work with employees rather than use PIPs

My philosophy is that it's better for supervisors to sit down, talk to the employee, and sort of nip issues in the bud as soon as they recognize potential areas of deficiencies and deal with them right away rather than letting things fester.

Most companies have already decided to terminate the employee by the time they get to a PIP. If I were running a business, I wouldn't issue a PIP. I would just sit down with the employee once or twice and genuinely explain how I wanted them to get better. You can still have a paper trail by sending a follow-up email outlining what was discussed and areas for improvement.

The mindset around PIPs should change. Companies should want their employees to improve, and they should deal with problems early on rather than just issuing PIPs at the end of the employment and then terminating.

If companies are issuing PIPs , they should be implemented or issued only once the supervisors have already spoken to the employees about these issues. PIPs should be genuine, clear, and articulate what they want the employee to improve upon. They should give employees the opportunity to improve. I don't think companies should use PIPs for the sake of trying to protect themselves from potential future issues.

Chart a course to or from the runway with an interactive and contextually-aware taxi route bubble editor. Dynamic Winds and Temperatures

View global forecast wind speed, direction, and temperatures at multiple altitudes and times using these stunning animated weather layers. Both the “Winds (Temps)” and “Winds (Speeds)” layers use colorful heat maps covering the globe to represent their primary forecast values at the selected altitude and time. Overlaid on each layer’s heat map are smoothly-flowing particle animations representing wind direction and speed, providing an intuitive view of large-scale weather patterns in relation to the layer’s primary forecast value (wind speed or temperature). Use the Time Slider to view wind forecasts in a 24+ hour period, and move the Altitude Slider to view winds from the surface up to 63,000 ft.

Airport 3D Runway Lighting

Prepare for a night approach or establish a mental picture with toggleable Day/Night modes and realistic Runway Lights in Airport 3D . Use the Day/Night toggle in the bottom-right corner of Airport 3D to dim the surrounding terrain and expose the airport’s runway lights. Runway edge lighting is supported for most paved airports around the world, while larger airports may also display touchdown zone lights, PAPI lights, displaced threshold lights with approach light system if available, centerline lights, end light flashers, and more.


Get the View at Altitude with 3D Review

Follow the path of planned flights from the Maps or Flights views, and replay past flights from Track Logs or Logbook entries with realistic pitch and bank if recorded with an AHRS-capable device. Pan and zoom within the interactive 3D View to get a full 360° perspective of the route environment. 

3D Approach Preview

3D Preview displays markers for each waypoint in your route, including labeled approach fixes, allowing you to better visualize every step of your approach down to the runway. 3D Preview also features an interactive navlog, allowing you to view each waypoint and the distances between them and quickly jump to any leg in the flight.

Weather in 3D Preview

Enable U.S. or Global Icing and Turbulence layers using the new layer selector in 3D Preview to display forecast weather along your route. 3D View depicts forecast weather as floating colored blocks that use the same color scale to represent forecast severity as the overhead map and Profile View. Use the altitude slider on the right to view weather at different altitudes, and tap the RTE button at the top of the altitude slider to only show weather at the same altitude as your route.

View live Internet Traffic via FlightAware in 3D Airports to analyze airport activity, follow takeoffs and landings, and more. When viewing an airport in 3D, tap the new layer selector in the bottom left and select Traffic to display any airborne traffic near the airport. Unlike the Traffic map layer, 3D Airports does not display ground traffic. Traffic targets appear as blue diamonds showing their tail number and current altitude. Tap on any traffic target to display its vertical and horizontal track as a blue curtain like in 3D Review.

Takeoff and Landing Distances for Pistons

Ensure that you can safely take off and land with runway performance calculations for supported piston and turboprop aircraft. ForeFlight uses published runway performance data and current weather conditions to quickly calculate the most important distance and speed metrics for both takeoff and landing, and warns you when the results exceed the selected runway’s limits.

Enhance your route planning with a cross-sectional view of internet icing and turbulence forecasts displayed in Profile View. Profile View uses the same color scales as the overhead map to depict varying intensities for each layer at multiple altitudes in relation to your route line. ForeFlight uses your planned departure and enroute times to display weather over multiple forecast periods during which your flight will be active, providing a more accurate picture of changing conditions throughout your flight.

Specify Approach Minimums

Specify an altitude minimum in Procedure Advisor when adding an IFR approach to your route to display the minimum directly on the map for quick reference during final approach. After choosing an approach in Procedure Advisor, enter an approach minimum in the Altitude (MSL) field on the left before adding the approach to your route. Once you add the approach to your route the minimum appears as a prominent magenta label at the very end of the route on the map.

Route Constraints for the Recommended Route

Route Advisor supports constraint types for the Recommended Route, giving you more flexibility to tailor routes to your own needs. Route constraints allow you to include or exclude any waypoint from your route, avoid any FIR, include an Oceanic Track, and set maximum and minimum altitudes, helping you reduce overflight fees and steer clear of dangerous airspace.

Marked Positions

Drop markers along your route during a flight to mark points of interest or comply with position plotting requirements, then view or share the marked positions after the flight. Each marker automatically captures your GPS coordinates, altitude, speed, and allows you to record additional notes or rename the marker. Rate cuts are coming: Gold prices hit a record high

• Gold prices surged Monday to a record high of $2,265.73 an ounce.
• The Fed's preferred gauge of underlying inflation came in as expected Friday, affirming 2024 rate-cut hopes.
• The yellow metal is generally seen as an inflation hedge, and it trades inversely to consumer prices.

The price of gold rallied to another record high on Monday, following fresh inflation data from Friday that boosted rate-cut hopes . 

The yellow metal climbed as much as 1.6% to a new high of $2,265.73 an ounce.

The year-over-year index of personal consumption expenditures rose 2.5% in February, in line with economist expectations. Core PCE, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 2.8% for the month, also in line with estimates. The results have fueled anticipation that the central bank's first rate cut will come in June.

Typically, a lower-rate environment makes holding gold more alluring compared with other assets such as bonds, which yield lower returns when interest rates drop. 

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell also applauded the latest US inflation data, saying it's "along the lines of what we would like to see" during his speech on Friday, which echoed his reiteration in last month's policy meeting of a rate cut for this year .

The surging bullion price was also pushed up by its robust overseas demand, as global central banks are shifting away from dollar reserves because of geopolitical risks. 

On the other hand, China's struggling stock and real-estate markets have forced many investors to pivot to the "safe haven." In February, the People's Bank of China acquired about 390,000 troy ounces of the precious metal. Overall, China's central bank now holds about 72.58 million troy ounces of gold, equivalent to about 2,257 tons.

GENEVA, CH | 28 May 2018 : ForeFlight today announced that it will introduce its flagship Integrated Flight Application for business aviation operators in Europe this summer.

ForeFlight Mobile, which will be on display for demonstration at EBACE ( stand K66 ), is the most widely used application by individual pilots and professional flight crews to efficiently access weather and airport information, plan flights with Eurocontrol valid optimized routing, file flight plans, access and manage electronic charts and maps, reference flight manuals and documents, avoid terrain and obstacles with state-of-the-art hazard awareness tools, access in-flight weather where supported, and aid enroute navigation.

ForeFlight will offer European flight crews a single solution for IFR and VFR planning, filing, and flying. All subscription plans for the Europe region include Jeppesen’s best-in-class digital IFR and VFR navigation data, which are dynamically rendered directly on ForeFlight’s fast data-driven Aeronautical Map, as well as AIP procedures, charts, and documents provided via EUROCONTROL.

Optional purchases include Jeppesen VFR terminal procedures (formerly Bottlang charts), Jeppesen IFR global chart coverages (available today), and host nation VFR data packages – initially with an option to add the AIP and charts from DFS.

Accessible in both views, the Graphical Route Advisor feature generates EUROCONTROL validated routes within a matter of seconds and presents the options for comparison on a visual preview map.

Graphical Route Advisor also makes it easier to find the correct route and select it for filing with the ability to filter routes based on IFR, VFR, YFR, or ZFR flight rules.

ForeFlight supports filing flight plans directly from the mobile app or on the web. The company’s global, uniquely geo-redundant AFTN connection provides fast, direct, and unlimited access to filing flight plans with EUROCONTROL with no additional cost or account configuration required.

Additionally, when filing flight plans via ForeFlight, customers receive Calculated Take-Off Time (CTOT) notifications via email and push when traffic management initiatives are in effect.

Feature Focus: Get The Most Out of ForeFlight

ForeFlight is loaded with powerful features to help you plan and fly with everything you need at your fingertips. Even though many of its most useful features have been available for years, we frequently encounter customers at shows like EAA AirVenture who have never heard of them.

So in the interest of maximizing ForeFlight’s value to your own flying, let’s dive deeper into some of those useful features so you can make the most of them. All the features mentioned below are included in all ForeFlight subscription plans, and you can learn more about any of them in our Pilot’s Guide , Support Center , and Video Library .

Aeronautical Map

Augment other charts like the sectional with dynamic and tappable map elements and quick toggles for easy decluttering. ForeFlight’s High Resolution Basemap and Terrain also provide detailed ground references with no other charts enabled.

Smooth Decluttering As you zoom in and out, the Aeronautical Map automatically shows and hides elements.

Details Are Just A Tap Away Simply tap on any Aeronautical Map element to view detailed information about it, even with other charts enabled.

Quick Filters Easily declutter the map using these toggles for different map elements.

Not seeing these? Make sure the Aeronautical layer is enabled and check the Quick Filters toggle in Map Settings.

Embedded Airport Diagrams Zoom in to view airport diagrams with labeled runways and taxiways and tappable hotspots and FBO markers.

More Options in Map Settings Customize the map further with different airport types, highlight or hide airspace, switch between IFR High/Low, and more from the Map Settings menu.

Map Settings

The Map Settings menu lets you further customize the Aeronautical Map as well as access many other helpful tools and features. While the main Settings view in More > Settings offers a few additional map-specific settings, this menu is quickly accessible right from the map for adjusting your most frequently-used settings and features.

To access Map Settings, tap the gear button at the top of the Maps view.

Starting at the top of the menu, you can quickly change your screen brightness as well as invert the chart colors for the VFR Sectional, IFR High/Low Enroute charts, and others that you can access from the Layer Selector. Instead of a “true” inversion that affects every color, this “smart” inversion flips white and black while keeping other colors the same so familiar chart elements are still recognizable.

In the ForeFlight Map section of the menu you can customize the Terrain and Basemap layers visible with only the Aeronautical Map enabled, as well as toggle global Place Labels that will appear on top of any chart or map.

The next section (only visible if the Aeronautical Map is enabled) lets you dive into the details of the types of map elements shown as part of the Aeronautical layer.  Toggle smaller airport types like private airports, heliports, seaplane bases, etc.; customize airspace types, hide airspace above a specified altitude, and dim the brightness of airspace outside your route with Auto Highlight; and toggle between High and Low IFR airways, waypoints, navaids, ARTCC frequency “postage stamps”, and more. This is also where you can show or hide the Quick Filters for the Aeronautical Map.

Auto Center Mode lets you choose from three options for orienting the map during a flight:

• North Up – The map is always oriented with North at the top and your ownship centered.
• Track Up Centered – The map rotates as you turn so your current GPS track is always pointing up, with your ownship centered on the screen.
• Track Up Forward –  Same as Track Up Centered, but your ownship is placed in the bottom third of the screen to show more of the map in front of you and less behind you.

With Auto-Center enabled (the button in the far upper-right corner of the screen) you can toggle between North Up and whichever Track Up setting you last selected without opening the Map Settings menu by tapping the small circle in the top-right corner of the map, which shows either “N” or a compass to indicate the current mode.

While often overlooked, the Map Overlays section contains some of the most powerful inflight features outside of the Layer Selector. Spend some time toggling these on and off to fully understand how they can fit into your inflight workflow – every minute will be worth it!

Route Labels Show or hide the labels attached to all the elements in your route (airports, waypoints, lat/long coordinates, User Waypoints, etc.).

Extended Centerlines Show or hide labeled runway extensions for all airports in your route. The length of these extensions are proportional to the runway length, and you can tap on any of the runway labels to view that runway’s details.

Distance Rings Show or hide a set of three concentric rings around your ownship on the map that correlate to distance or time (at your present groundspeed). Tap on the labels for any of the rings to change how their size is determined.

Track Vector Show or hide a line extending in front of your ownship indicating your direction and speed of flight. Visit More > Settings > Track Vector Length to change how the line’s length is determined, such as distance vs flight time.

Glide Advisor Uses your aircraft’s glide ratio, current GPS altitude, surrounding terrain, and winds aloft to present a ring showing your glide range.

Breadcrumbs A thin green line indicates your aircraft’s path since takeoff. Breadcrumbs automatically activate on takeoff and end when you land. You can set how long the breadcrumbs remain on the map before disappearing after a flight in More > Settings > Breadcrumbs Clear After.

Map Legend Show or hide a legend at the bottom of the Maps view to interpret the colors of any currently-selected weather layer. when the following weather layers are selected.

Marked Positions Show or hide a button on the left side of the Maps view which when tapped will drop a green position marker at your current location. You can then review and export these markers as part of the flight’s Track Log or in the Flights view. Available with a Performance Plus subscription plan.

Map Annotations Show or Hide the Annotations button on the left side of the Maps view, and tap this to enter Annotation mode. Use the Annotation toolbar along the top of the map to set details like color, line thickness, and undo annotations or clear the map.

Track Log Record Button Displays a REC button on the left side of the Maps view for manually starting and stopping Track Logs. When recording, the length of the current Track Log appears below the button.

Four Color Radar Only available when one of the Radar layers is enabled. Toggle this selection on the menu to change the radar depiction from the high resolution radar mosaic to a lower resolution, four-color mosaic.

Internet Radar Coverage Only available when one of the Radar layers is enabled. Displays the area of available radar coverage while connected to the Internet. Areas with no coverage show hash marks and a “Radar not available” label.

Map Touch Action Only available when a raster chart (e.g. Sectional, IFR Enroute, etc.) is enabled. Show or hide legends and borders by selecting whether or not the charts are brought to the front with or without legends.

The Multiple Selections setting under Layer Selector keeps the Layer Selector open after toggling any layer so you can toggle multiple layers quickly without reopening the Layer Selector for every one. Simply tap the Layer Selector button itself or elsewhere on the screen to close it.

Opacity Sliders for multiple weather layers and any plate or airport diagram overlaid on the map appear at the bottom of the Map Settings menu when these are active.

Finally, when connected to any supported external device like a Sentry Plus, Garmin Connext Flight Stream, Bad Elf GPS, etc., you can quickly access the device’s status and settings page (the same as you would find in More > Devices) at the very bottom of the Map Settings menu.

ForeFlight Web

Enjoy ForeFlight’s powerful flight planning capabilities right from your web browser. Get full access to view and edit your Logbook, plan and file flights, and even import documents to sync to your mobile devices via the cloud.

You can start planning from your browser by visiting plan.foreflight.com . 

The Flights, Maps, and Aircraft tabs are similar to their mobile counterparts with the added convenience of a mouse and keyboard. Easily view charts and weather layers, plan routes, brief and file flight plans, and add or edit your aircraft profiles, with everything syncing to your mobile devices so you can pick up right where you left off.

For Business account administrators, the Aircraft tab also supports “publishing” aircraft profiles to make them accessible to all users on the account, complete with all details, cruise profiles, and Weight & Balance profiles, making it an essential component of ForeFlight’s account management suite.

The Imagery tab lets you see a variety of weather imagery for different regions worldwide to help you plan your flight more efficiently.

Documents on ForeFlight Web is a newer update and allows more flexibility for managing your documents. With this update, you can upload documents directly from your computer to your mobile devices, view PDF files in your web browser, move documents in and out of binders, and much more. Then watch as it syncs to your mobile devices.

Your binders and drives will show up just like on your mobile device, and use the Import button to add documents from your computer. You can also move them in and out of your Binders and Drives.

Enhanced Weight & Balance

Create, edit, and plan with Weight & Balance profiles more easily with ForeFlight’s Enhanced Weight & Balance view. The updated W&B view has a similar layout to the older one, with fields for entering load information, the weight and CG graph, significant weight values, detailed results, and powerful new integration with Flights to further streamline your flight planning. Pack For A Flight

The Pack feature simplifies pre-flight preparation and enhances your safety by ensuring that you have all of the current charts, data, NOTAMS, fuel prices, and the latest pre-departure weather information stored on your device for inflight access. 

Once your flight is ready in the Flight Plan Editor, tap the suitcase button with the red exclamation mark, and ForeFlight will download all the information you need for your flight.

You can also access the Pack feature from the Flights view by scrolling down to the bottom of your flight details and tapping Pack.

Route Advisor

Enhance both VFR and IFR route planning with a detailed view of commonly-filed routes, airways, TEC routes, EUROCONTROL-validated routes, and ForeFlight’s optimized Recommended Route between any two airports.

To open Route Advisor, add your departure and destination airports into the Flight Plan Editor, then tap Routes.

From the Routes pop-up, you will see a list of potential routes you can select from, along with a visualization of the route on an interactive map. You can tap the route you want to view from the list or directly on the map.

If an aircraft performance profile has been added to the flight, Route Advisor will estimate time enroute, fuel burn based on that profile, and the route’s total distance. Additionally, Performance Plus customers have access to ForeFlight’s Recommended Route .
